SEMINAR

On the One and the Pas-Tout
Paola Mieli

Pursuing our reflections on voluntary servitude, this seminar continues to explore the relations between the subject and the collective and the discourses that organize them. Particular attention will be paid to the function of the One and Lacan’s logic of the pas-tout (often translated as “the not-all”), as well as to the function of the subject supposed to know in social bonding, in the discourse of science, in that of religion, and in the unfolding of clinical treatment. The way in which contemporary ideologies and identitary claims partake in new forms of segregation will be addressed.

Paola Mieli is a psychoanalyst practicing in New York City. She is the president of Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association (New York), a member of Le Cercle Freudien (Paris), of Espace Analytique (Paris), and of the section of Psychoanalysis in Psychiatry of the World Psychiatry Association (WPA). She is the author of numerous essays on psychoanalysis and on culture.
