Obsessional neurosis is Freud’s discovery. That it appeared at the end of the 19th century (whereas hysteria has been in evidence since the ancient Egyptians) and that Lacan, toward the end of the 20th century, declared it the only neurosis he was still sure existed, should give us pause.

Alain Vanier is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, and an emeritus professor at the Université Paris 7 Diderot. He is an Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association faculty member, and, in English translation, the author of the monograph Lacan, published by the Other Press.

1) Identify the factors that place the clinical structure of obsessional neuroses as the "ideal" neuroses of our times.
2) Examine the role that those factors have in the economy of jouissance.
