Obsessional Neurosis: A Modern Economy of Jouissance
Alain Vanier

Saturday, May 14, 2022
10:30 AM - 2:30 PM EDT

Obsessional neurosis is Freud’s discovery. That it appeared at the end of the 19th century (whereas hysteria has been in evidence since the ancient Egyptians) and that Lacan, toward the end of the 20th century, declared it the only neurosis he was still sure existed, should give us pause.

Suggested Readings Freud: Notes Upon a Case of Obsessional Neurosis (The “Rat Man”) (1909). Lacan: Seminars V (1957-58) Formations of the Unconscious and X (1962-63) Angst. A. Vanier: "Névrose obsessionnelle, névrose idéale," Figures de la psychanalyse, n° 12, Érès, 2006.

Alain Vanier is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, and an emeritus professor at the Université Paris 7 Diderot. He is an Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association faculty member, and, in English translation, the author of the monograph Lacan, published by the Other Press.
