The Capitalist's Discourse — Alain Vanier

FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

The Capitalist’s Discourse

Alain Vanier

Saturday, April 22, 2023 • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
Time Zone: Eastern Time (US and Canada)

This presentation will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and via Zoom).

School of Visual Arts, 133 W. 21st Street, Room 402C, New York, NY

In 1972, three years after defining the forms of the social link through four discourses (those of the master, the hysteric, the university, and the analyst) Lacan, in Milan, proposes a fifth. Should we read the capitalist's discourse as a supplement to, or variant on, the previous four? In fact it raises new questions about the relation between politics and psychoanalysis, the place of psychoanalysts in public life, and possible clinical consequences.

Suggested readings: Freud: Civilization and its Discontents (1930). Lacan: Le Séminaire. Livre XVII. L’envers de la psychanalyse1969-70. [The Other Side of Psychoanalysis]; “Du discours psychanalytique” in Lacan in Italia 1953-1978 (Milan, La Salamandra, 1978).

Alain Vanier is a psychoanalyst and psychiatrist, and an emeritus professor at the Université Paris VII Diderot. He is a vice-president of Espace Analytique and an Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association faculty member. In English translation, the Other Press has published his monograph Lacan.
