WORKSHOP ON CHILD ANALYSIS

“Is It a Boy or a Girl?”

Catherine Vanier

Sunday, April 23, 2023 • 10:00 AM – 12:30 PM
Time Zone: Eastern Time (US and Canada)

This presentation will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and via Zoom).

School of Visual Arts, 133 W. 21st Street, Room 402C, New York, NY (for in-person only)

For some years now, medical science can answer this question well before birth. But is it an answer? If, as Freud teaches us, the unconscious knows nothing of sexual difference, how can our clinical practice address children diagnosed with “gender dysphoria,” the questions they are posing, and the difficulties in construction or deconstruction they encounter along their way?

Suggested readings: Freud: Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality (1905). Lacan: Seminar XX, 1972-73, Encore.

Catherine Vanier practices psychoanalysis in Paris. She is a member of Espace Analytique, heads L’École Expérimentale de Bonneuil-sur-Marne, and is a faculty member of Après-Coup Psychoanalytic Association. Besides many books in French, she has published in English (as Catherine Mathelin) Lacanian Psychotherapy with Children: The Broken Piano, and (as Catherine Vanier) Premature Birth: The Baby, the Doctor and the Psychoanalyst (1917, Karnac Press).
