Singular Femininity:
The All and the Not-All

Gisèle Chaboudez

Saturday, November 12, 2022 • 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM ET via Zoom

In the 1970s, Lacan posited that a phallic logic — an age-old discursive logic supported by the law, which Freud deciphered and largely shared — could not account for femininity in its entirety. Fifty years on, Lacan's innovative logic of the feminine as “not-whole” remains little known or used, despite the obvious fact that social changes in the redistribution of functions between the sexes shows it to be strongly at work in today's society. This workshop will explore the relevance of Lacan’s logic.

Suggested readings: Freud: “Analysis Terminable and Interminable” (1937), for the “biological bedrock of human life.” Lacan: Le Seminaire. Livre XXIII. Le Sinthome, 1975-76 (class 1, p. 13, éd. Seuil, 2005), for language as invented by women; “Conférence à Genève sur le symptôme,” 4 oct. 1975, reprinted in La cause du désir, vol. 95, no. 1, 2017, pp. 7-24 (English translations on internet as “Geneva Lecture on the Symptom"). Chaboudez, Gisèle: Que peut-on savoir sur le sexe?: un rapport sans univers (2017).
