FOUNDATIONS OF PSYCHOANALYSIS

The Theater of the Unconscious

Jean-Michel Vives

Saturday, October 29, 2022 • 10:00 AM – 2:30 PM ET

This presentation will be held in a hybrid format (in-person and via Zoom).

School of Visual Arts, 133 W. 21st Street, Room 402C, New York, NY (for in-person portion only)

Reference to the theatrical model is very present in psychoanalytic theory and has been since its origins. The transference stages a space of fiction where the analysand unknowingly plays out a written script. The unconscious needs the fictional scene of the transference to enact a desire that pushes for its interpretation. In the analytic act analysands can discover themselves as co-authors of a script they are creating.

Suggested readings: Freud: (with Joseph Breuer) Studies on Hysteria (1895); “Psychopathic Characters on the Stage” (1905-06); “The Dynamics of the Transference” (1912); “Recollection, Repetition and Working Through” (1914). Lacan: Le Séminaire. Livre VIII. Le Transfert, 1960-61/Seminar VIII, Transference, 1960-61 (Polity).

Jean-Michel Vives is a professor of clinical psychopathology at the Université Nice, Sophia Antipolis and practices psychoanalysis in Toulon, France. He is the author of many essays on the invocatory drives, autism, music therapy, and clinical approaches to psychosis, and of the books La voix sur le divan, La médiation par le théâtre: Freud et Dionysos sur la scène thérapeutique, and Autisme et médiation: bricoler une solution pour chacun. He has also directed several theater and opera performances.
