The section “Observation of Nature” in chapter 5 of Phenomenology of Spirit can be considered a fundamental point from which to understand Hegel's surrounding reflections on Self-Consciousness, Reason and Spirit. Following the constant movements of life and the dialectical relation between inorganic and organic in the natural world provides tools for grasping his ideas concerning Individuality, Subjectivity, Objectivity and the crucial processes of Negation and Recognition.

Suggested reading: G.W.F. Hegel, The Phenomenology of Spirit, Cambridge University Press, 2018, pp. 136 – 252.

Raffaella Colombo is a scholar of moral philosophy and modern political philosophy (particularly Spinoza and Leo Strauss), but her interests include Imitation theory and Freudian theory, and analyses of collective psychical dynamics. In Human-Animal Studies, she has investigated animal cognition and animals’ legal status, and co-authored Dalla predazione al dominio. La guerra contro gli animali (2017). She is editor-in-chief of the journal Balthazar.
